SCHOOLS AND EVENTS
April 30, 2011- What a treat to be invited back to Sylvania Heights Elementary School (FL). Breathe, Eat and Photosynthesis was the lesson of the day. It was wonderful going back into Ms.Losada's class. The students had enjoyed the previous presentation Water Needs and Supplies on 3/8/11. I know because they sent wonderful letters! I heard that I am getting more letters. Love the letters!

April 22, 2011- EARTH DAY
I was  proud to be displaying Nature's Natives 4 panels of environmental awareness artwork at Miami International Airport! Unfortunately, I couldn't see it because it was behind the scenes with TSA and airport employees. I was told by Dwayne (TSA) that the display was very well received especially since Nature's Natives® is informative without the gloom and doom. This is one of the things that NN does best... facts without judgement and easy to understand.
March 8, 2011-  Sylvania Heights Elementary School (FL) was my destination. Water Needs and Supplies was the lesson of the day. I was invited by the school nurse.  The students truly enjoyed learning this important Nature's Natives lesson. Ms. Losado's and Mrs. Blount's classes sent wonderful letters telling me what they learned and how much they enjoyed the presentation. Great letters. I want to thank Yurania who was wonderful with scheduling the classes.
February 24, 2011-  Rainbow Park Elementary School (FL) was my destination. Breathe, Eat and Photosynthesis was the lesson of the evening. I was invited to the school by the Community Outreach Coordinator. NN kicked off the Evening of Science program.
This was my second visit to this school. My first visit, Wanda Water Visits Miami-Dade was the opening act for students and parents who would be learning about FCAT ins and outs.
January 8, 2011- the Cancer Community Center was my destination. Photosynthesis and Peace of Mind was the lesson of the day. This was my 3rd time presenting at the Cancer Community Center. What a special place!
The kids ages were between 6 and 18 with a few groups of siblings. One 17 year old said that she wished she had science like this when she was a kid. All enjoyed blowing bubbles as we practiced our deep breathing. I was invited to present at the center by Dr. Peggy Rios, the Center's Director.
Really, what a wonderful resource for the community!

September 24, 2011 - It rained. It poured. Those Scouts, Troop Leaders and Parents are a very tough group! They stayed through the rain and a good time was had by all. I tip my hat to Sharon Krutulis and the Girl Scouts for putting this together. Picture groups of girls proudly wearing their Troop's distinctive T-shirts. But they all had a common theme, 'I am a Girl Scout'.

I was fortunate to have a table inside for my Nature's Natives® display and demonstration.
Not only that, I was next to the face painting lady (who was really good!). Lots of traffic!
I had the privilege of talking to many girls, Troop Leaders, and parents. Thank you Troop 552, Troop 213, Troop 137, Troop 361, Troop 333, Troop 220 and all the others for stopping by. I had fun sharing the Nature's Natives® lesson of the day...Why we Need Water and Where our Water Supply is Located.

After the lesson I asked the girls, "What did you learn?" I wrote down their answers. This is what our future women had to say. (Great intro for those participating in the Scouts Wonders of Water theme.)
I learned about:
The water cycle
Why we need water to live
Water is underground for us
We need water for our kidneys
We need water for bones
Why we should save water and what water is used for
We use water to live
When water is used we need it to rain
Water goes into the aquifer when it rains
We need water for the earth
Water is good for kidneys and bones
Water is good for plants
We use the water we need
How we get water
Water seeps down into the aquifer
Aquifers are made up of rocks
Water comes from under the ground
We are connected to clouds because it rains
Water is good for your body
We get our water from the aquifer and rain
We need water for our bones, kidneys and electrical system
Water is life and we need water
Water is used all over the world
We drink water that comes from the ground
When it rains we get more water
We need to drink water
If we waste too much water we can't use it for what we need

These are smart girls! These girls are our future.

    DCSTA ANNUAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING
October 5, 2011 - On Wed. evening Nature’s Natives had the pleasure to be a vendor at the Dade County Science Teachers Association (DCSTA). Their Fall Annual Membership Meeting was held at the Miami Museum of Science. I’m always amazed at the high energy these teachers have when they talk about what they are teaching in the classrooms. One teacher mentioned that she teaches High School science and has taught the top students of the school and also the more challenging students. One thing that stood out, she expects the class to give their best.
My personal thanks goes out to all of these science teachers who touch the lives of students day by day and year by year.

NATURE'S NATIVES®
Friendly environmental education
November 18 & 20, 2011 - The International Miami Book Fair was so much fun! Friday, the Green Tent was filled with elementary school students who were enjoying the day's field trip. The Miami Museum of Science was the host of the Green Tent. All of us vendors complimented each other with environmental education available. The Deering Estate had their table top display and also had a craft activity for the kids (the life cycle of the butterfly in pasta). An environmental awareness about the ocean  entertained kids as they learned how long different items (paper, plastic etc.) take to decompose. Miami-Dade Solid Waste Management had a wonderful display of what can be recycled and what should not be put in the bin. They also had samples of a baseball cap that was made from recycled bottle caps and a carpet sample that was made from the same. Very interesting! Of course, Nature's Natives was there, too. Water needs and supplies was the lesson of the day with 'aquifer'.

Sunday had a totally different crowd. So many families came out to the book fair and so many families joined us in the Museum of Sciences' Green Tent. Sunday's vendors included the Miami Museum of Science, Sweet Vine, M-D Solid Waste Mgt. and Nature's Natives. Kyle Pereira was assisting me for the day. Thanks Kyle! Thanks to all of the families that came to visit us in the Green Tent!

November 9, 2011 - Air Base Elementary School at Homestead, Florida had an event that I never saw another elementary school do. They had a Green Education Fair on a weeknight at the school. What was so impressive was that over 500 people came out for the event. The parents and kids were in a good mood along with the faculty and staff. The event was very well organized and besides the vendors there were activities galore for the kids to enjoy. The faculty, staff, administration, students and teachers were amazing!

PERRINE ELEMENTARY EXPRESSIVE ARTS
December 15, 2011 - Perrine Elementary School had a new experience for me. I presented Nature's Natives Water Needs & Supplies but this time the presentation was video taped and then shown to every student in school. This Nature's Natives presentation was part of  this school's Green School Challenge. What an honor! I was curious as to how the video taping went and here's the answer from Ms. Dean who is part of the school's Green Team.

--The video was awesome and was viewed by the whole school. The art teacher had the students reflect their learning. I have some of those pictures (in particular, one little girl drew happy kidneys when they get enough water – so cute!). Hopefully, I can transmit to you a copy of the video and photos of the artwork real soon. Again, I thank you for contributing to our students’ learning and to our green school challenge.
January 23, 2012 - The only thing better than spending time at the Deering Estate at Cutler is presenting Breathe, Eat and Photosynthesis to the group spending the day at the Estate's Mini-Camp. Here's what is listed: Monday, January 23, 2012
Topic: "Plants"
Special Guest: Lynne Hudgins from Nature's Natives
“Breathe, Eat & Photosynthesis” presentation from 10 am to 10:45 am
This is a tribute to the remarkable process in nature that gives us our oxygen, takes carbon dioxide out of the air and starts our food chain!

Nature's Natives will be back at the Deering Estate on March 17th with Wanda Water Visits Miami-Dade story and animation.  http://www.deeringestate.com/

TEACHER'S CONFERENCE
February 11, 2012 - It's always a treat to meet many teachers from all around the County at a single event. Students don't know it but teachers are a fun group of people. The Annual Miami-Dade County Science and Mathematics Teachers' Conference took place at the historic Miami Sr. High School. These events are fun because I not only get to talk to teachers but I also get to talk with other vendors. There are wonderful resources out there and I'm glad that Nature's Natives plays a part.
