WANT TO TRY THIS?
2 mason jars
1 C water
1/4 C vegetable oil
Marker
Fill each jar with 1/2 C water.
Add 1/4 C oil into one of the jars.
Make a mark on the jars to show the water and oil levels.
Set the jars in sunlight for a few days and see what happens.
It's a good thing that the Gulf of Mexico is really big. Not all of the water was covered with oil.
If all of the water were covered with oil then evaporation wouldn't happen. That would certainly be a glitch in Wanda's water cycle.
In this simple experiment I took two mason jars and put the same amount of water in each jar. Then I poured vegetable oil in the water of one of the jars. The oil formed a layer on top of the water. (Oil and water don't mix.)
I set the jars out in the sun for a few days.
What happened? The water with the oil on top did not evaporate. The water in the jar without the layer of oil evaporated.
